'Big Break' Gaining Momentum

Date: 22 December 2009

A competition offering budding film-makers their ‘Big Break’ is gaining momentum, with thousands of people viewing and voting for entries online.

Close to 50 entries have already been received through the competition’s website and top videos viewed online around 5,000 times each.

The competition is giving five film-makers the chance to travel to New Zealand and get their work in front of legendary director Peter Jackson. The finalists will be flown to New Zealand to make their own three-minute films on location, with the help of The Lord of the Rings producer Barrie Osborne and Wellington’s Park Road Post Production facility.

Members of the public can go online and vote for their favourite screenplay at the competition website - www.your-big-break.com. The ‘people’s choice’ favourite will be among the five finalists, with the other four chosen by an expert panel.

While the campaign is targeting the US, New Zealand’s third largest inbound tourism market, the competition is open to anyone in the world. Entries have been received from New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Europe, Middle East and South America, as well as North America.

The five finalists will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get their work in front of Peter Jackson, who will select the winning film which will run on US television in 2010.

Tourism New Zealand launched the competition in early December as a novel way to get people talking and to raise awareness of New Zealand as a holiday destination in the US.

The involvement of film industry heavyweights Peter Jackson and Barrie Osborne has helped word spread quickly about the competition. Tourism New Zealand has also begun paid advertising targeting creative, film and entertainment audiences, with advertising across hundreds of US websites. Advertising will drive awareness of the competition and encourage people to visit the website and vote for their favourites.
