The IRB Rugby World Cup is the third-largest sports event in the world. The inaugural tournament took place in 1987 and it is held every four years. The 2011 tournament will take place in New Zealand in October 2011.
Tourism New Zealand is part of a co-ordinated cross-government strategy to maximise the benefits of hosting the Rugby World Cup for tourism, trade and the overall New Zealand brand.

The Giant Rugby Ball
This unique venue has been used, with great PR success for New Zealand. Initially in Paris, France during the 2007 Rugby World Cup (read more), and then in London, UK in November 2008 to coincide with the All Blacks Rugby Tour (read more). The Ball's next stop is Tokyo, Japan for the All Blacks - Wallabies Bledisloe Cup clash in November 2009 (read more).
